Exam Blues

“SILENCE IS GOLDEN”
“NOISE POLUTION MAY BE LETHAL”

its fun when you can hang out like this, but what if your laughter disturbs others?

When you go to the SA to study and you end up listening to the sound of clashing pool balls, laughter, screams and high pitched shrieks, you tend to give up on your studies. By doing so, you decide to go online for just a few minutes when your gut tells you that you need to be more focused on your studies. You stood up, dragged that lousy ass of yours and walk that seriously long pathway to the library.

Upon arrival at the library you are greeted with loud whisperings, those whispers seemed to be as if they were discussing world matters with each other, then you start pondering, why are whispers so loud that it can be categorized as talking out aloud. And the moment you put that heavy ass of yours, you hear another controlled laughter, as if it can’t be heard throughout the whole room. You turned your head and saw no one laughing, maybe it was just you, your mind is playing tricks on you, only now you regretted sleeping late last night just to cover that stupid chapter about noise filtering.

With the perfectly air-conditioned room already starting to make an impact on your body, you start to sneeze and your hands are cold and you are shivering. You start wondering, why the heck is the library this cold, you then look around and everyone seems to be quite warm, maybe it was the skirt that you wore, or maybe that jacket was a bit too thin. You head out to the foyer and looked at your watched and realize that the library’s going to close in 10minits. You quickly pack your bags and went back to SA only to again, receive the same amount of noise you received hours ago.

Knowing all efforts to study in the SA will succumb to a failure, you begin heading to your room thinking about those chapters which might be of importance and of those which you have not covered. And while walking you bumped into a friend who knocks you off you focus (day dream). Started talking and walking and soon enough you arrive in front of your door. All the effort for the day earned you a well deserved nap.

BOOM!!! You could hear some war movie being played and from the sound of it, it’s titanic (2) being sunk. That alone made you wake up, getting cranky upon being forced to get up, you rush to the bathroom for a taste of hot water to freshen up the body and came up squeaky clean and fully refreshed. An after dressing up, you decide to start studying for the paper, two days from now.

Then, BOOM another bomb hits the floor, this time; maybe Kate Hudson was molesting Leonardo De Caprio or something. And you go “SHUT THE F**K UP!!!!!!” and so came a nervous breakdown. The exam stress can do a lot of things to you, especially if you’re a scholarship student, having had to score at least a 60% just to maintain that scholarship, you tend to bury your face in the book whenever there is time (during the exam period).

I wish you all good luck for the exams and I seriously hope you guys will strive to the maximum in the effort to get good grades. Remember to have fun too, but not to the point that it will effect or offend others especially during this exam period.
Final words from me, I’ll soon be leaving this university due to the fact that I’m almost graduating, and to all of you who knows me personally, I would like to say thanks for the good times together and for you support (if you ever gave any) for me in upholding my life in this university. I will greatly miss you guys and hope to always be able to help out in this blog.

I think that most of the comments regarding noise levels are rather personified. Also the SA is not a recommended place to study, its catered more towards leisure. However if the library doesn't suite you there is always the 24 hour study room.

thats agreeable.. but no matter what form of leisure, its still disturbing to hear repetitive high pitch screaming, and inconsiderate shouting rite? i mean.. even at public places... In a bus, in a restaurant, you may not be studying.. but the excessive repetitive noise... which is just unnecessary.... And the response you can see in S.A itself clearly reflect's everyone's annoyance.. Just have fun and be considerate.. whether its laughter, leisure, chatting, gaming,.. watever..

=P yup.. as for those who is playing pool.. no matter how noisy also those voices are not as annoying as those hyena-laughing and shierking noises.. XD

Sa if FOR making noise.
You might complain about the noise on one day and you might be the one making noise the next day. If the noise is too loud is the study room or library you could always report it the education officer or his committee.

that sounds like a committee member speaking! lol

Areas like the Study room and the Library are the recommended places for silent study to occur.

If people are making noise in the Study Rooms or the Library and its bugging you... Tell Them!
I guarantee that if its bugging you, its bugging 10 other people lol

We all know the rules so dont be afraid to enforce them, they are there for everyones benefit.

When we begin to show a little more responsibility toward each other and our surroundings the benefits will be seen not heard lol

study room, sa, tiscra, library are all noisy. the only quiet place i knew was semenyih. haha.

yeah2,all people knew that no such place for "study quietly" yow...but i knew one place that no one will disturb u..it is semenyih cemetery located along the way to tekala river..that's a damn cool quiet yow..u should try to study there!!!even once!

To all those always complaining and wanting a quiet place to study, there you go with a nice suggestion below!!! Hahaha...

lol.

I had the same problem too in study room when I was studying and revising for Semester 1 exams. Anyhow I learnt my lesson. This semester exams I have been like a caveman studying in my room.

Those noise-makers they just don't know when to stop talking shits.

i have to agree with the writer.. the people in the picture are very noisy. i m pretty sure that they are new foundation students. i m just hoping for them to be considerate towards others and just keep their sound level low.

@ comment above:
No not just foundation students. when FRIENDS are studying in a GROUP, there's bound to be noise. it's part of who we are as students. Although that does not excuse us from being more responsible and considerate.

That said, yes, i think i agree with some comments above. We need to inform Parshby to erect a study room at the semenyih cemetery. That'll be damn quiet. LOL

yeah. nice one. semenyih cemetery. we should inform the SA execs to schedule a bus there. from 1a.m. and pick up at 6 a.m. the ghosts are more quiet than the freaking clowns students.

Pic above is definitely the new foundation students of April 2009. Anyway, I can only spot two hot bodies, (and only 1 hot face). haha

There's a reason why SA top floor has pool, Foosball and a television room. It's an entertainment area. And by entertainment area. Doesn't that mean that students are allowed to enjoy themselves when they're there?
If anyone who'd like to have some peace and quiet. The study room, computer lab and library is available. And those who whine about the noise and stay on campus/off campus, isn't your room quiet enough for you to study?

my opinion is that the writer is just plain childish. Please grow up!your an uncle and your not being one.

Shouldnt it be a common knowledge that the library is the most suitable place for studying? It is not an excuse to diss other people at the S.A as it is the right place for socialising and making noise. We admit that we are new to the University, and at times we over-enjoy ourselves, but is that not what Prof. Ian Pashby told us to expect here? That we SHOULD enjoy our university life to the fullest? Anyway, it is NOT ethical to take other people's photos without permission. It is more ridiculous to cut, paste and attach an additional photo along with the original! We as new students have equal rights. We understand the rules. And as Gerard said in his email, if we want to make noise, go to the SA! Study rooms and libraries are the only places for quiet study time. So beat it! Adapt yourselves as how we are adapting now! Get headphones if you stubbornly want to study in the SA! We are not to be accused for disturbing peace! Respect that! And quit taking pictures! This aint hollywood! You're not paid to be a paparazzi!

if u wanna complain, go complain sa 1st. they place pools and tv here, it means its a place for us to have entertainments. If they get all these off the sa, we'll definitely go somewhere else to make noise. From Student Association to Study Area -.- DUH.

Geeks who have no social life better shut up. you only have books and studies where as we have to maintain our social life. If you dun have friends den make new friends. wanna complain or take photo den come face to face with us. i'll be waiting for you !!!!!!! I'll welcome you any time.

definitely. you guys need a life...
THE SA IS A PLACE TO HANG OUT IF U WANNA STUDY GO TO YOR FUCKING ROOM OR ANY STUDY ROOM---> dont screw life for us.
MAY I REMIND YOU AGAIN GO TO THE LIBRARY IF U WANNA STUDY. IF U DONT KNW THE WAY CALL ME ON 012########.

use ur stupid brain and think the sa is the place to hang out, not a place to study. what idiot studies in a place with pool tables and the table top football. go get a life and dun fuck with us. since u said that u're going to graduate but too bad, u cant think wisely.

SA building = Student Association building = place for students to enjoy, relax and play around.

What's the point for the university to provide us with a LIBRARY and STUDY ROOMS if not for you people who would like to STUDY?????????? You have the license to make noise in SA (Gerald, 2009)

The law prohibits the posting of any pictures of individuals without a propper model release form. See you in court!!!

yes!! i know law..i can help u..we can sue UNCLE and ask for the mental compensation!!!!!

if sound pollution is lethal then wont all the residents of KL be dead by now? Furthermore I am using my brain I SEE signs that say no smoking but i dont see signs that say no talking. The SA is the students association building so it belongs to all students not one single person. if you take pictures and critisise people in the sa then why not do the same for those in the library? the libray has signs so why not critisise those people. im refering to your post here "Upon arrival at the library you are greeted with loud whisperings". why does one have to sacrifice their ability to talk for others to study what if we were having group disscussions and so on. Think carefully before you post!

i can help with the negotiation.... we not only want mental compensation but also want to drag your bookworm ass to jail...

in addition to that if u wanna b a BOOKWORM STUDY IN YOUR OWN FUCKING HOLE DO NOT COME TO THE SA AND SPOIL THE FUN,,......

Let me get this straight, SA is NOT a place to study. It's a place for students to hang out and relax. That's why the pool tables and Tv rooms are here. How on earth do we know that there would be someone stupid enough to choose SA to study? If you wanna study, go get a study room. That's why it is called a STUDY room. Still not satisfied with it? Go to your room, you can do whatever you like! And it is pathetic to snap pictures of others and criticize them without their consent.

these kind of people only know complain complain and complain!! maybe he put his brain in his ass! try use ur brain to think about it, since know SA will be very noisy, then please don't come. If u still come, that's mean u are very STUPID!! Since u know SA very busy, but u still come..just go other place! what a stupid guy!

People who swear here are even more pathetic. No respect to the university at all.

SA is a place to hang around nd have fun.. haven't u noticed the .pool tables nd the tv.. if u wanna study go to our room or study rooms..its pathetic to take pictures of others nd uploadin it nd talkin crap bout them.. if u dont have lyf itsur prob we do so "FUCK OFF"

it is right that SA is not a very good place to study if you must study in silent.

however, foundation students should respect senior students as seniors are about to have their final exam which is very important to them!

on the other hand, how can seniors expect foundation students to respect them when they hardly even care about them.

the first example of cause us the taking of pictures without permission!

taking the picture itself shows that the person who took the picture did not even have an respect for the people in the picture.

so as the seniors have disrespected the foundation students, the foundation students disrespect them back.

so we seniors should just shut up and study!

both parties are wrong and both are right.

but for now, seniors should just study and forget about who is right!

why'd u all have to swear and stuff? i nvr thought nottingham students are of 3rd classs mentality. there are proper ways to object without swearing. it reflects our university reputation idiots. what will other students who want to pursue their studies here will thing when they read this. god.

not all of us do that!
only a few! but that's bad!
anyway, there is no law saying SA is not a place for study and there is no law saying it is a place for study...
but!
please!
we are all humans!
learn to tolerate with each other for god sick!

take notice of the time of those comments posted at 20th of May. yes, time interval between comments and comments are short.
They're properly from those people in the pictures. haha
Let's imagine, they found the picture in this page, '' oh my god, it's me in the pic!'',and they started to SPAM, spam spam..! haha.. pathetic.. yea, correct me if im wrong, why so serious? lol

Enough talking sh*t, im also a foundation student. I think SA is the place to make noise, but when i mean noise, it doesn't include 'barking' from bitches.. that's utterly unbearable and god damn irritating.
can u feel the differences between sound from pooling and noise of a bunch of chicks shouting around? it's not about study's issue, it's about respect, the noise is , ya, killing..

and to guy that used F word, u're pathetic, real pathetic.. U talked like mat rempit that doesn't deserve to be in this University and i can imagine how is ur face looks like.. haha

Ohh god I so agree with the comment above. It cracked me up, thanks kid. Yeah it's like comments galore and all were coming straight from em. Haha.

Soo I used to study at the SA during exam time. I had no other choice, sometimes other places like the library and the study rooms were full. It's not like I mind the noise, I don't mind it at all. But it was the loud, irritating, squeaking voices coming from em that I just couldn't stand. I mean yea sure talk all you want, no one's stopping you. But don't have to let the whole floor know bout it too aight? It's just plain childish, you guys are in uni now. Have a little consideration, and keep it low next time yeah?

Heck, as if it matters anymore. Exams are over yo! Happy holidays peeps. To the foundation students, enjoy having the campus all to yourselves. Goshh I certainly did back then ;)

lol .. guys, personally i think SA is a place to have fun and laugh about. Just 1 thing, it's common courtasy to actually low down the volume of the voice, i mean, the message is brought forward by the ministry and widely spread among the mass media. Just try to practice courtasy, it is not about SA being a place to study or not.

Anyways, signing off,

ps: i was only posting it here since one of the students requested it.....
~uncle

first its spelled courtesy not courtasy...n second this uni consists of young adults if u want quite go to n elderly home...if ya'll want peace GO TO YOUR ROOMS...simple

This is a good post, the way you write it, and I believe many students actually felt the same as you, including me, though I never try to study at SA, as I required complete silence to study, but I always find it hard to study in the library, for there are always people doing group discussion or simply have their books open and talking and laughing on other things, and I don't even bother to try the study room as I hold little faith for it.

For people who said SA aren't for study, you are WRONG! You probably think that study is just about reading books, notes and all other paper stuff, but please bear in mind that group discussion is actually a form of study as well, as it serve the same purpose as reading, to gain knowledge, and that is why there is a room with tables and chairs upstairs SA. And I would presume that you think the TV is only for watching movies, football and MTV, which it actually can be used to do research, as it play discovery and other similar channels.

Regarding the noise level, let me share my own experience. I got complained by my housemate downstairs last exam for blasting music, which I personally think that it wasn't loud at all. But I respect him, for the sake that not everyone can take noise the same, a quiet place for someone could be like a market for another.

Lastly, for those who want sue uncle for mental compensation, you should probably be ready be charge for verbal abuse.
